I was given the opportunity recently to do an exciting review: 40lbs of fresh chicken provided by Zaycon Foods.
Zaycon Foods is a Washington based company. They were created in 2009 to bring fresh meats and other products direct to consumers at wholesale prices. The item that is taking the market by storm is their cases of fresh boneless, skinless chicken breasts. This chicken is 100% natural chicken with no added hormones, additives or artificial ingredients. It is sold in a 40lb case.
I had the chance to meet one of the co-owners of Zaycon Foods who informed me a little more about their products. Mike said what makes their chicken superior to store bought chicken is how fresh it is. He stated that the chicken in the box was at most 3-5 days old and never frozen. He said that store bought chicken is usually two week old. I did not realize that but it makes sense when you think about the logistics from the farm, to the butcher, to the warehouse, to the grocery store, processed by the in-house butcher, then to the cooler you pick the package out of. The only way to beat this freshness is to raise the chicken yourself. Also, at only $1.49/lb, this chicken is significantly less than most grocery stores. By eliminating the middle man (i.e. the grocery store), Zaycon Foods can sell higher quality products for lower prices.
Here is how my chicken was delivered, a cardboard box with several plastic bags on the inside. I was amazed by the shear amount of chicken in this box.
One thing I want to mention is, the chicken is considered “pre-butchered.” What this means is that the chicken breasts are still connected and have a little more fat than what you would buy in the store. This is how the grocery stores receive chicken. It is also how Zaycon Foods achieves the lower price per pound.
Some quick work with a knife and you now have beautiful looking chicken breasts. Take notice of how big these breasts are. There was 50 chicken breasts in my case which means each breast is approximately 13oz each.
We decided to vacuum pack all of our chicken. We put two breasts per vacuum bag. This makes for easy meal preparation. Just simply pull one or two packs from the freezer and thaw. Be sure to check your freezer bag supply before starting this project. We realized halfway in that we only had three vacuum bags. The larger Ziploc bags are two gallon bags. FOUR GALLONS OF CHICKEN!!!
Here are the trimmings that I removed from the chicken breasts. This consists of excess fat and the little nugget shaped piece of chicken at the top of the breasts. You can either throw this away or be frugal like me. I decided to fry these scraps and give my dog a treat.
While frying the scraps, I noticed there was a large amount of the nugget shaped pieces of chicken. At that point I had the bright idea of fully cooking the meat and freezing it for stir-fry. Here you can see how much was salvaged by doing this. This later made a great quick meal. My dog still got the scraps too.
We ended up grilling a couple of the breasts for dinner. You can see how these chicken breasts are not pumped up with water like many in the store. There was very little shrinkage after grilling. I have to say they were delicious. Mr. CC did an excellent job with dinner that night!
Want to Purchase a Case of Chicken?
You will need to register at Zaycon Foods. Once you have registered, select the state that you want to be notified of events in. You can choose as many regions as you would like.
You will be notified via email when there are scheduled events in those regions. If you have a specific request, you can email them at: firstname.lastname@example.org. When you are notified of an event in your area you will simply choose how many 40lb. cases you would like to purchase and pay for your order. When the pick-up day arrives just bring your receipt with you to the pick-up location to get your chicken. You do not even have to get out of your car. You drive up, show your receipt, and they put your chicken in your car! How’s that for service?!
One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to wait for the last minute to place an order before you need the chicken. In order to maintain freshness along with efficient logistics, Zaycon Foods will only make a sale event when there is enough demand. The best thing to do is locate an event near your location and plan to attend.
